Route 4: Countryside and Cultures
1st Day
Madrid - Tarancon - Cuenca
Departure across the Castilian high plains to the Province of Cuenca. Accommodations at the Parador of San Pablo, an ancient 12th century convent. Afternoon escorted walking tour of Cuenca. See the "hanging houses", perched on the cliffs, the Main Plaza, cathedral, and the Baroque city hall. Dinner at the Parador.
2nd Day
Cuenca Albarracin - Teruel
Buffet breakfast and departure to Albarracin, a town of Roman origin in the mountains of the same name. Lunch in a local restaurant and continue to Teruel, a city of Carthaginian origins, for dinner and accommodations in the Parador, a palace of Mudejar design.
3rd Day
Teruel - El Maestrazgo - Alcaņiz
Buffet breakfast and free time to explore the Main Plaza with its Mudejar towers, cathedral, the aqueduct and the convent. Departure through the Mountains of Gudar, through interesting villages like Rubielos de Mora. Continue into the region of the "high Maestrazgo", passing through town Cantavieja, famous for Trondon cheese. Lunch and c ontinuation to Mirambel, a town which testifies to the deeds of El Cid, the Spanish folk hero. Dinner and accommodations in the Parador of Alcaņiz, a medieval castle.
4th Day
Alcaņiz - Valderrobres - Calaicete - Tortosa
Buffet breakfast and departure to Valderrobres, which traces its origin to medieval times, as evidenced by its walled old quarter. Continue to Calaceite, a town which boasts evidence of original Iberian population, and then to Tortosa, a city founded by the Iberians. In the afternoon enjoy a short excursion on the Delta of the Ebro River. Dinner and accommodations in the Parador of Tortosa, a 10th century castle.
5th Day
Tortosa - Poblet - Barcelona
Buffet breakfast and departure into the region of Catalonia. Arrival in Poblet. Visit the impressive monastery, the largest and best preserved of the Cistercian Order. Lunch in a local restaurant and continue to Barcelona. End of services upon arrival in Barcelona.
