General Information: Santorini

Santorini or Thira island which is one of the Cyclades islands, is situated 128 nautical miles from Piraeus. This volcanic island spans over 75 sq.Km and has approximately 8,000 inhabitants. Many breath taking sites and rare phenomenons of volcanic activity in the nearby small islands of Nea and Palea Kameni, make this Greek Cycladic island a must place to visit, that is guaranteed to make your vacation an unforgettable experience.

Thousands of tourists visit Santorini every year to witness one of the most majestic sunsets, offered when on top of this wild rock. The most southern of the Cyclades islands has become a meeting place for romantics who wish to admire nature's wild intervention in the south Aegean. Many also arrive to meet the supposed last remaining piece from the lost world of Atlantis, that was «swallowed» by the sea, when a volcano erupted 3,500 years ago, causing the end of the Minoan civilization.

In this unique island you will experience the vacations of your life since no other island in the world will offer you the colours, the flavours and the scenery of this extraordinary place. The locals, having created a bold culture under the threat of a volcanic eruption, will present you with various new experiences and emotions that will make you return to Santorini every summer.

Nothing can prepare you for the rare sight you will encounter once you visit Santorini. White villages built on wild grey cliffs, black sand on endless beaches and the imposing volcano, creating a unique atmosphere. The «black pearl of the Aegean», welcomes you to a world of strange beauty.

The view from the ship is extraordinary. Layers of red, maroon and black ground have been formed from volcanic eruptions and have created a sheltering and at the same time threatening environment.

In Santorini you can visit many castles, churches and monasteries, from various eras, that present the different civilizations that flourished on the island.

The most famous site of Santorini, though, is the wonderful sunset one can admire from several villages, on top of the high rocks, especially from the village Oia, which offers the best view of Santorini, of the volcano and of the smaller Burnt Isles.

The magnificent, panoramic scenery is an ideal setting for a wonderful, romantic afternoon and will remain in your memories forever.

Santorini also hosts the largest caldera on earth (7 x 14 miles), inside the bay, enclosed by the rocks of the island. This piece of land floating on south Aegean is filled with natural wonders and everywhere you look, you are sure to view unique spectacles.

The volcano, the excavations, the caldera and the sunset will carve amazing images in your memory, pictures of your most perfect vacations.
